My trip to Alfândega da Fé, in the northeast of Portugal, was very short but memorable. I explored the historic center at the end of the day, and on the following morning I set out to discover the surrounding area, traveling from north to south.
Along the way, I passed through several charming villages, with Sambade and Cerejais standing out for their authenticity and traditional atmosphere.
One of the highlights of my visit was a drive around the Lakes of the Sabor River (Lagos do Sabor), a peaceful natural setting perfect for nature lovers.
Still, my favorite spot was Santo Antão da Barca, a must-see place when visiting Alfândega da Fé. Not far behind is the breathtaking Cabreira Viewpoint (Miradouro da Cabreira), which offers stunning panoramic views of the region.

So, what should you visit in Alfândega da Fé, what is there to see, and what can you do?

Visit Alfândega da Fé’s Historic Center
A visit to the historic center can easily be done in 2 to 3 hours—or even less if you’re in a hurry. To be very honest, the historic center itself didn’t surprise me; it’s quite simple. Even the urban art, which I’ll mention next, could use a bit more flair. But I’d love to hear your thoughts—do you agree with me or not? Share in the comments!
1. Urban Art in Alfândega da Fé
Starting in the lower part of town, the first attraction that caught my eye was the urban art. Near the Green Park, you’ll find the town’s most striking sculpture: a giant Roman Soldier’s Head. This one is absolutely worth seeing!
But there’s much more to discover:
- The Organic Mountain, The Cherry Grove Portal, and the Fountain of the Four Rivers, all located in the Green Park.
- The Phoenix, on the façade of the Volunteer Firefighters building.
- Four Perspectives of Alfândega da Fé and Lines Lines Lines (my personal favorite), close to the Town Hall.
- The Angel Fountain, not far from the Main Church.
- The beautiful Tile Panels of the Parishes.

2. Green Park of Alfândega da Fé
The Green Park is a very pleasant space — a wide garden that seems perfect for the daily run so many people include in their routine. 😉
Highlights include the bridge and the lake at the far end of the park, along with touches of urban art that bring extra charm.

3. Casa da Cultura Mestre José Rodrigues
The Casa da Cultura Mestre José Rodrigues is the place to go if you want to learn more about the municipality’s cultural agenda. It also houses the Alfândega da Fé Tourist Office, making it a great starting point for visitors. The building includes an auditorium and a gallery, which always features exhibitions worth checking out.
4. Chapel of Saint Sebastian and the Town Square
The Chapel of Saint Sebastian is very simple, except for the bell tower — which, interestingly, didn’t originally belong to it. The square where the chapel stands was the busiest spot I came across during my time in Alfândega da Fé. The same can be said for the Town Square and the area around Alfândega’s bandstand.

5. Church of Mercy of Alfândega da Fé
The standout feature of this 16th-century church is the statue of Our Lady of Mercy on its main façade. It is located in the oldest part of town, set on higher ground compared to the previous square — and getting here is an uphill walk all the way.

6. Clock Tower of Alfândega da Fé
The Clock Tower is a whitewashed, square-shaped structure — simple in design, yet without a doubt the town’s main attraction. Visitors can step inside to see the photographic exhibition displayed within.

7. Castle Square of Alfândega da Fé
Of the castle built during the reign of King Dinis, little remains today. Still, from here you can enjoy sweeping views over Trás-os-Montes, stretching out behind Alfândega da Fé.

8. Chapel of the Ferreira House
This 17th-century chapel is located in the former Palace of the Távoras, not far from Castle Square.

9. Parish Church of Saint Peter
Dating back to the 16th century, this church stands out from the others for having a bell tower instead of a belfry. It is larger than the surrounding churches, yet still maintains a simple character. On your way back down to the lower part of town, don’t miss the Chapel of the Holy Spirit.

Visit the Parish Church of Sambade and the Sanctuary of Cerejais
In the surroundings of Alfândega da Fé, the villages of Cerejais and Sambade are well worth a visit. Their main attractions are the religious buildings — which, to be honest, I found even more appealing than those in the town’s historic center.
The Parish Church of Sambade, also known as the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption or the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, dates back to the 18th century. While in Sambade, be sure to stop by the Centro de Interpretação do Território, right next to the church — a kind of rural museum showcasing local traditions.
The Sanctuary of Cerejais, or Sanctuary of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, is much more modern, both inside and out. It is surrounded by a pleasant garden and includes a replica of the Cova da Iria from Fátima.
Optional stop: I also made my way to the Sanctuary of Saint Bernardino in Gebelim.

The best viewpoints of Alfândega da Fé
And as for tourist highlights, I’ll end with the viewpoints overlooking the Sabor Lakes: the Santo Antão da Barca Viewpoint and the Cabreira Viewpoint.
1. Santo Antão da Barca Viewpoint
This is the one best prepared for visitors. I was pleasantly surprised by the large parking area, as well as the well-equipped picnic park with barbecues and even restrooms. It stands beside the chapel of the same name and is clearly one of the most visited spots around the Sabor Lakes.

2. Cabreira Viewpoint
The Cabreira Viewpoint won’t disappoint either, though it’s a simpler roadside stop along one of the scenic drives around the Sabor Lakes.

Sports Activities on the Sabor Lakes (Paddle)
I didn’t actually take to the waters of the Sabor Lakes while in Alfândega da Fé — I saved that experience for neighboring municipalities, since my visit here was a quick one.
Still, the Municipal Council’s website provides information on how you can enjoy water activities such as paddleboarding. You can also ask at the Casa da Cultura Mestre José Rodrigues or check with GotoWeekend on Facebook for more details.
Hiking Trails in Alfândega da Fé
I didn’t manage to hike in Alfândega da Fé either, though I know there are several trails in the area.
The one that seems most appealing to me is the Percurso do Sabor, a linear 8.5 km route. It passes through Santo Antão da Barca and offers excellent views over the Sabor Lakes. It’s one of the nine trails included in the 9 Steps through the Lands of Trás-os-Montes campaign.
What to Visit Near Alfândega da Fé?
Honestly, any of the other municipalities in the district of Bragança are worth exploring! 😉
