Visiting Figueira da Foz allows you to explore one of the top tourist destinations on the Portuguese coast in the central region of the country, which was once renowned as the Queen of Portugal’s Beaches. It boasts vast sandy beaches, perfect for soaking up the summer sun, and an ideal sea for engaging in various water sports activities, such as surfing and windsurfing.
Figueira da Foz is the city where the Mondego River, the fifth largest river in Portugal and the longest entirely within the country, flows into the sea. It’s a vibrant city that offers a lot of both daytime and nighttime entertainment, along with an excellent gastronomy.
During my youth, Figueira da Foz was one of my favorite beach destinations. Are you ready to visit it with my tips? In this article I will share with you the best of the region, a detailed list of things to do in Figueira da Foz for several days traveling there.
Where is Figueira da Foz located, in Portugal?
Figueira da Foz is located 50km from Coimbra, 60km from Leiria, and 70km from Aveiro. Therefore, it is situated in the central region of the country, within the district of Coimbra. It shares its borders with the municipality of Cantanhede, Montemor-o-Velho, Soure, and Pombal.

How to get to Figueira da Foz?
If you want to visit Figueira da Foz but haven’t bought tickets to Portugal yet, I recommend that you use Skyscanner or Google Flights to do a search before buying them, comparing prices and flight conditions. You have many connections with Porto or Lisbon from abroad.
Already in Portugal, it is very easy to get to Figueira da Foz by public transport, bus or train, whether from Lisbon or Porto, or from other major cities in the country, such as Coimbra. Use the express buses from Rede Expressos, or the trains from CP – Comboios de Portugal.
In the region of Figueira da Foz there are many places to visit apart from the central town, so consider renting a car with Discover Cars to visit them all. Why don’t you go for a roadtrip along the portuguese coastline? 😉
Take out Travel Insurance to visit Portugal
To be protected against several types of travel hazards, I also recommend that you take out travel insurance for your stay in Portugal, and I recommend to do it with World Nomads.
When to visit Figueira da Foz?
The best time to visit Figueira da Foz is undoubtedly during the summer, as you can fully enjoy its fabulous beaches during that season.
When it comes to festivities, the main event in the municipality takes place at the beginning of summer (the City Festivities / Festivities of São João), which promises plenty of entertainment over several days in the month of June. After all, we’re talking about the time of the Popular Saints, which are also celebrated in Figueira da Foz.
Regardless of the date of your visit, always take a look at the municipality’s event agenda to stay informed about upcoming events.
Gastronomy and Restaurants in Figueira da Foz?
The city festivities mentioned earlier can be the perfect opportunity to taste and savor the most typical dishes of Figueira da Foz.
In summary, make sure to try the Fritada à Moda das Alhadas (a local fried dish), Arroz de Polvo (octopus rice), Raia Enxambrada or de Pitau (skate fish specialties), Tamboril à Buarcos (monkfish dish), seafood stew, seafood rice, or any other fish-based dish from both the sea and the Mondego River.
For dessert, how about trying Papas de Moado (a dish made with pig’s blood, so be aware)? Another treat enjoyed by everyone is Brisas da Figueira da Foz.
When it comes to places to eat, consider options like Tasca Maria, Restaurante Caçarola I, Volta e Meia, or Stella Maris.

Visit Figueira da Foz City Center
When I last visited Figueira da Foz, I easily parked my car near Europe Square and the City Hall. It was from there that I explored the downtown area of Figueira da Foz on foot, to gather content for this article. 😉
1. Europe Square of Figueira da Foz
Europe Square is located on the banks of Mondego River and features a gigantic sundial. It also showcases a bust of Manuel Alfredo Aguiar de Carvalho, who served as the Mayor of Figueira da Foz from 1982 to 1997 for four consecutive terms.
2. Figueira da Foz City Hall and Luminous Fountain
The City Hall itself is located on the other side of Avenue Saraiva de Carvalho. The building dates back to the late 19th century and has always served as the Town Hall of Figueira da Foz. One notable feature is the large fountain in the adjacent garden, which is usually illuminated at night.
3. Figueira da Foz Marina and Casa do Paço
I recommend strolling along the banks of Mondego River, all the way to its mouth, opting to admire the numerous boats moored at the city marina and recreational dock, with a capacity for over 300 vessels. On the other side of the road (Avenue of Mondego Mouth), you will find Casa do Paço, an even older building than the Town Hall, dating back to the early 18th century. It served as a holiday house for the Bishop-Count of Coimbra, D. João de Melo. Inside, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the fabulous collection of Dutch tiles from the same period.
4. Fort of Santa Catarina
Before reaching the Fort of Santa Catarina, you will pass by the spacious Dr. João de Ataíde Square, where I saw many children skateboarding or rollerblading, and having fun with small motorized jeeps that could be rented nearby.
There is also a nice beach on Mondego River to enjoy, known as the beach of the fort of Santa catarina, which is quite small but protected from the ocean waves. For those who enjoy walking, there is the opportunity to go all the way to the lighthouse of Molhe Norte, where you can enjoy great views of the river and the vast Atlantic Ocean in Figueira da Foz.
Let’s not forget about the fortress itself, which was built in the late 16th century to protect the mouth of Mondego River, along with two other fortresses in Figueira da Foz, which I will mention later in this article. 😉 In addition to its imposing walls, the fortress stands out for its lighthouse and the chapel dedicated to Santa Catarina de Ribamar. It also features a pleasant garden and a surrounding lake.
5. Central Beach of Figueira da Foz
The Central Beach of Figueira da Foz, also known as Clarity Beach or Clock Tower Beach, is a vast stretch of sand that extends uninterrupted to Buarcos. It is so expansive that to reach the sea from the city, you will have to walk over half a kilometer on wooden walkways above it. As the main beach of Figueira da Foz, it naturally has very good infrastructure. How about taking a walk or bike ride along the ecovia route that leads to Buarcos?
6. Clock Tower of Figueira da Foz
The Clock Tower is undoubtedly one of the main highlights of the city, standing at 20 meters tall and located right in front of the beach on the promenade. It dates back to the mid-20th century.
7. Balcony António da Silva Guimarães
Next to the Clock Tower, you will find a staircase leading to a beautiful “balcony” of the city, the Balcony António da Silva Guimarães. In this area, you will come across Laranjeira Santos Contemporary Art Center, and a very nice viewpoint to the sea.
8. New Neighborhood of Santa Catarina and Casinos of Figueira da Foz
I also mention the New Neighborhood of Santa Catarina, which began construction in the mid-19th century as a way to accommodate the increasing number of summer visitors to the city during that time. The neighborhood is known for its 19th-century and early 20th-century houses, featuring intricate tile work, beautiful balconies, and decorative elements associated with Art Nouveau.
Both the Casino Oceano and the Casino of Figueira da Foz emerged in the late 19th century. The first no longer functions as a casino but still retains its original elegant appearance; the latter was originally not a casino at all but the headquarters of the Saraiva de Carvalho Theater-Circus, having today a completely renovated glass facade.
9. Market and Municipal Garden of Figueira da Foz
If you’re looking to visit the main green spaces in Figueira da Foz, start by exploring the Municipal Garden. This park features a playground, several monuments and statues, and plenty of shade. It’s a very pleasant place in the city center.
Next to it is the Municipal Market of Figueira da Foz, also known as Engenheiro Silva Market, which was inaugurated in 1892. Here, you can find a bit of everything, including fruits, vegetables, fish, and crafts. It’s an excellent place to shop for supplies needed for a picnic or a simple beach snack.
10. Abadias Park
The Abadias Park is a long garden without much tree cover. Personally, it didn’t impress me at all, but I believe it has a lot of potential if some improvements are added, such as fitness stations or small monuments. For example, it would be excellent for urban art sculptures or even contemporary art installations.
11. Santos Rocha Municipal Museum
On the side of Abadias Park, you will find several buildings of tourist interest, such as the Municipal Museum Santos Rocha. It takes its name from António dos Santos Rocha, who founded it in the late 19th century to exhibit artifacts discovered during archaeological excavations carried out in the municipality. Currently, the museum offers much more than that, with notable collections of sacred art, furniture, ethnography, armory, among others.
Note that this museum was initially located in Casa do Paço, mentioned earlier, and later in the building of the Town Hall. It was only in 1975 that it moved to its current location next to Abadias Park.
12. Municipal Library and the Arts and Entertainment Center of Figueira da Foz
Also on the side of Abadias Park, you will find the Municipal Library of Figueira da Foz. However, even more interesting is the Arts and Entertainment Center with frequent programming of theater, cinema, dance, and music. It can be an excellent place to spend your evenings while visiting Figueira da Foz.
13. Quinta das Olaias
Quinta das Olaias emerged in the 19th century and was the setting for numerous summer gatherings attended by many prominent figures in the arts and politics of the time, such as Júlio Dantas, João de Barros, Cesário Verde, Bernardino Machado, Camilo Castelo Branco, and Guerra Junqueiro. Today, it houses a museum space with exhibitions of ceramics, furniture, textiles, jewelry, and paintings.
14. Churches of São Francisco and Santo António
I also highlight the Churches of São Francisco and Santo António, located side by side. They are the remaining structures of the ancient 16th-century convent that underwent several renovations in the following centuries.
15. Church of São Julião and Quartel da Imagem
The main church of Figueira da Foz is the Church of São Julião, which is known to have existed at least since the 11th century, making it the oldest temple in Figueira da Foz. There are no remnants from that period, as the current construction dates back to the 18th century.
In the same square as the Church of São Julião, you will find the building of Quartel da Imagem, which was previously the Fire Brigade Headquarters of Figueira da Foz. It now serves as a coworking space called “Market of Ideias”, aiming to foster creative activities.
16. Luís de Camões Square and Pillory of Figueira da Foz
Near the completion of Figueira da Foz city center, it’s essential to visit Luís de Camões Square, where you’ll find the city’s Pillory, dating back to 1782, and a Monument to the Fallen of the Great War.
17. Square 8th of May and Monument to Manuel Fernandes Thomaz
Finally, do not forget 8th of May Square, where the impressive monument to Manuel Fernandes Thomaz stands out, particularly his statue and tomb. This Figueira da Foz native was recognized as the main driving force behind the Liberal Revolution of August 1820, which restored freedom and independence to Portugal after the French invasions.
Visit Buarcos
Buarcos is located just north of Figueira da Foz, along the seaside. As I mentioned before, how about going there by bike, following the beach’s eco-trail, or even walking along the seashore?
1. Buarcos Fortress and Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição
Undoubtedly, the highlight is its fortress, the Fort of São Pedro de Buarcos, believed to have existed since the beginning of the monarchy in Portugal, when it was necessary to protect the coast against pirate attacks or possible invasions from the sea. Its three bastions, namely the Conceição, S. Pedro, and Nazaré bastions, likely date back to the 15th century.
Make sure to visit the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, located in the vicinity. It emerged in the 16th century, in honor of Nossa Senhora das Ribas.
2. Tamargueira and Buarcos Beaches
If you’re a surf enthusiast, you will love Tamargueira Beach, renowned for having the longest wave in Europe. 😉 Make sure not to miss the opportunity to surf it or simply admire it from the beach.
As for Buarcos Beach, it seems to offer excellent conditions for windsurfing, thanks to the protection provided by Mondego Cape to the north. However, be cautious as there are many rocks near the sea in the Mondego Cape area.
3. Statue of the Varina of Buarcos
The main square of Buarcos is undoubtedly the one where you can find the Statue of the Varina, carrying a basket of fish on her head. It pays tribute to the region’s typical customs and the profession of women involved in fishing.
4. Maritime Museum of Buarcos
In Buarcos, you will also find the Maritime Museum, which aims to remember and promote the same traditions associated with fishing and the sea as the Statue of the Varina. These traditions are gradually being practiced with less intensity or have even ceased to exist in modern times, but they are an integral part of the history of the people of Figueira da Foz.
5. Pillory and Castle of Redondos
Do not overlook the Redondos Pillory, which dates back to the mid-16th century. The castle, on the other hand, is actually just the ruins of an old defensive tower, but it is believed that a structure of this kind has always existed there since the 13th century.
In the vicinity, be sure to admire the façade of the Trindade Theater, which is now the headquarters of the Football Union of Buarcos.
6. Churches of Mercy and São Pedro
To conclude your visit to Buarcos, make sure to check the Church of Mercy and the Church of São Pedro. The first is a 16th-century Manueline-style church, although its main façade was remodeled in the 18th century. The latter, on the other hand, originated in the 15th century but was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. The current construction of the Church of São Pedro also dates back to the 18th century.
Visit Figueira da Foz south of Mondego River
In my opinion, the best beaches in Figueira da Foz are located south of Mondego River. They are highly sought after for surfing, bodyboarding, and windsurfing.
- Cabedelinho Beach, located at the mouth of Mondego River. Its waters are calm, making it ideal for children or those who prefer non-wavy conditions.
- Cabedelo Beach, adjacent to the previous one. It boasts a wide sandy beach and usually has gentle waves. This beach has been my choice for many years, and when the sea was more agitated, I would head to Cabedelinho. 😉 There are excellent wooden walkways nearby.
- Hospital Beach, named after the hospital located nearby.
- Cova da Gala Beach, both the northern and southern parts of it. Generally, you can find it more secluded in the southern area, as most bathers tend to go north, where the village of Cova da Gala is located.
- Costa de Lavos Beach.
- Leirosa Beach.
Do not forget to visit the Salt Museum or, more importantly, take a walk along the Salt Pans Route of Figueira da Foz, which starts at the museum. The trail is less than 5 kilometers long and provides an opportunity to observe various bird species, such as flamingos. The route is easy, well-signposted, and offers beautiful landscapes within the Mondego Estuary.
To finish, I mention Santa Maria de Seiça Monastery, which is in ruins but was undergoing intervention and restoration during my visit. It would take several months to complete, but perhaps you might be lucky enough to visit after its renovation? 😉 Do some research beforehand to see if it’s worth the detour.

Visit Mondego Cape and Serra da Boa Viagem
In case you’re not aware, the Mondego Cape region was classified as a natural monument of Portugal in 2007 due to the abundance of Jurassic-era traces, including the oldest megalosaurid footprints in Portugal and numerous fossils of various types. Don’t miss the opportunity to admire the urban art of Bordallo II, “Ammonite” which serves as a reminder of the connection between this place and that period in Earth’s history.
As for the main tourist attractions, I must highlight the viewpoints, namely:
- Bandeira Viewpoint, easily accessible. On clear days, it offers a great view of the flat lands extending north as far as the eye can see. Do not follow the dirt path that starts from this viewpoint, as it doesn’t lead anywhere interesting, let alone to the geodesic landmark you see in the distance — it’s a waste of time!
- Murtinheira Viewpoint, near the geodesic landmark of Serra da Boa Viagem. The access is relatively easy, although it requires a short walk to get there (not through the path mentioned before!). It’s a similar viewpoint to the previous one but provides a closer view of Murtinheira and Quiaios Beaches.
- Mondego Cape Viewpoint, allowing to see the south coast up to Buarcos.
- And the 2 Viewpoints of Mondego Cape Lighthouse: the one accessible from the observation post and the one with the improvised frame by the roadside (“selfie Farol”).
Regarding the Mondego Cape lighthouse, it’s worth noting that you should also visit the ruins of the Old Lighthouse, which dates back to 1835. The current lighthouse was only inaugurated in 1922.
There is also a waterfall in Serra da Boa Viagem, marked on the article’s map, but disregard it during hot months — it will be dry! I haven’t had the opportunity to visit it yet.
Lastly, there are the beaches, both north and south of Mondego Cape:
- I recommend going for a walk on the boardwalks that connect Quiaios and Murtinheira beaches as they are truly stunning and offer scenic views of the sea and mountains (Serra da Boa Viagem).
- Discover Pedra da Nau Beach, followed by Teimoso Beach and Mondego Cape Beach. They have lots of rock formations to admire by the sea.

Other places to visit in Figueira da Foz
To finish this article, there are still other places to visit and things to do in Figueira da Foz that were not included in the previous sections.
1. Coliseu Figueirense
The first places are in the vicinity of the city center, and I start with Coliseu Figueirense, the bullring of the city that dates back to the late 19th century. It is an optional visit.
2. Fort of Palheiros
Another optional visit is the Fort of Palheiros, which emerged in the 16th century with the same purpose as the previously mentioned Fort of Santa Catarina: to defend the mouth of the Mondego River.
3. Palace of Sotto Mayor
The Palace of Sotto Mayor as exquisite facade, gates, and gardens. Although I haven’t done it myself, I believe it is possible to visit it by prior appointment. Please check the contact information on the City Council’s website for more details.
4. Adventure Park of Figueira da Foz
You can also have fun at the Adventure Park of Figueira da Foz. For more information, visit their official website.
5. Tavarede Palace
Tavarede Palace dates back to the 16th century but has been renovated over the following centuries, so nothing remains of the original structure. It is just another manor house to visit in Figueira da Foz, so I consider it optional.
6. Salmanha Viewpoint
The Salmanha Viewpoint is a must-visit, offering a panoramic view of Mondego River and the salt pans area, as well as the Edgar Cardoso Bridge.
7. Mill of Vila Verde
I also highlight the Mill of Vila Verde, which was once used for grinding grains and producing flour, harnessing the winds of the region.
8. Palace of Maiorca Viscounts
The Palace of Maiorca Viscounts is arguably the most spectacular manor house in Figueira da Foz, dating back to the 18th century. It was owned and inhabited by Viscounts, adding to its historical significance and grandeur.
9. Maiorca Lagoon
In the vicinity of the previous place, you will find also Maiorca Lagoon, which was formed on a old quarry. Its waters have a greenish hue and create an idyllic setting, but swimming is not recommended. Please be aware that the fencing was cut during my visit, but this may not be the case when you visit. I wish you good luck, as the lagoon is truly beautiful.
10. Ruins of Santa Olaia and Chapel of Santa Eulália
The Ruins of Santa Olaia are of archaeological interest, and the artifacts discovered through excavations there can be seen in the municipal museum of Figueira da Foz. The findings span various historical periods, including the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman, and Medieval periods.
Near this ancient settlement, you will also find the Chapel of Santa Eulália, which offers a fabulous viewpoint overlooking beautiful rice fields.
11. Carniçosas Dolmen
At the municipal museum of Figueira da Foz, you will also find the artifacts discovered during the excavations of Carniçosas Dolmen, the main megalithic monument in the municipality. As a curiosity, the archaeologist Santos Rocha identified, up until his death, 19 funerary monuments (dolmens) scattered throughout the territory of Figueira da Foz.
12. Quiaios Lagoons (Braças, Vela, and Salgueira)
To finish off, we have the enormous lagoons of Figueira da Foz, located to the north of the municipality and bordering the municipality of Cantanhede. These include Braças, Vela and Salgueira Lagoons, with the second one being the largest and most interesting of the three. Swimming is not recommended in these lagoons, but on the bright side, you have the opportunity to observe various bird species during your visit.
I highly recommend exploring the small section of boardwalks next to Vela Lagoon, as they provide the best viewpoint to it. On the other side of the lagoon, you’ll find the small recreational park “This is Timor”, named after a boat that burned there in previous fires, with only a plaque bearing the name “Timor” surviving. This space was created and maintained by the locals of the region and even features a swing!
Enjoy the Nightlife in Figueira da Foz
When visiting Figueira da Foz, you’ll find plenty of options for a vibrant nightlife. The area around the casino, as well as the casino itself, stand out as popular spots for evening entertainment. However, why not take a leisurely stroll along the promenade or catch a show at the Arts and Entertainment Center?
Go Surfing in Figueira da Foz
If you’re keen to go surfing during your visit to Figueira da Foz, you’ll be glad to know that you can easily rent the necessary equipment from local schools. For example, with Surf School, Dude Surf School, and Surfing Figueira, all located near Cabedelo Beach.
