Visiting Vila Flor means discovering a still relatively unknown destination in the heart of Trás-os-Montes. To be honest, I myself had no idea there was a municipality called Vila Flor in the Bragança district until I looked closely at a map.

Vila Flor truly amazed me—mainly because of its panoramic sanctuaries and the stunning views over the Tua Valley.

In this guide, I’ll show you what to see and do in Vila Flor. While you can spend up to two days exploring, I believe one full day is enough to cover the essentials. Ready to travel?

Where is Vila Flor located, in Portugal?

As I mentioned, Vila Flor is located in the Bragança district and serves as one of the gateways to the Tua Valley Natural Park. It lies within the region known as Terra Quente Transmontana and borders Mirandela, Torre de Moncorvo, Carrazeda de Ansiães, and Alfândega da Fé. In other words, it’s perfectly situated near the Sabor Lakes and the Douro River.

Rent a car to visit Vila Flor

When it comes to planning your trip to Vila Flor, my main tip is to have a car—it makes exploring both the municipality and its surroundings much easier. If you don’t have one, consider renting through Discover Cars.

When to Visit Vila Flor?

Vila Flor can be visited at any time of year, but spring and autumn are ideal for avoiding the intense summer heat. These seasons also offer pleasant weather for swimming—especially in late spring and early autumn.

On the municipality’s official website, you’ll also find a detailed list of festivals and fairs held throughout the year. Here are some highlights:

  • January 20 – Feast in Honor of Saint Sebastian (Vila Flor)
  • March 19 – Festa dos Rapazes in Nabo
  • August 15 – Pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Assumption, considered the largest pilgrimage in Trás-os-Montes (Vilas Boas)
  • August 24 – Feast in honor of Saint Bartholomew, the biggest festival in Vila Flor
  • First Sunday of September – Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Remedies in Vilarinho das Azenhas

In addition, Vila Flor hosts monthly fairs on the 15th and 28th of each month at the Municipal Fair and Exhibition Park, plus an annual fair on August 12 and a Handicraft Fair in December.

Gastronomy and Restaurants in Vila Flor

When it comes to food, Vila Flor is all about traditional flavors. Don’t miss the oven-roasted goat or lamb, as well as local specialties like the alheira sausage or the classic posta de vitela (veal steak). For dessert, indulge in rice pudding with cinnamonolive oil cakes, or a homemade fruit jam paired with regional sheep cheese.

Here are my restaurant recommendations when visiting Vila Flor:

  • Restaurante Dom Dinis
  • Restaurante Dom Castro

Things to do in Vila Flor

When I visited Vila Flor, I explored the municipality from north to south. That’s exactly how I’ll guide you through it in this article, with the historic center of the town as the final stage. But first, here’s a map with all the must-see attractions.

Map with the highlights to visit in Vila Flor

1. Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies (Vilarinho das Azenhas)

The first must-see stop when visiting Vila Flor is near Vilarinho das Azenhas, perched on top of a hill. No, it’s not as grand as the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies in Lamego, but it does feature a lovely viewpoint overlooking the village and the Tua River. 😉

2. Walking Trail from Vilarinho das Azenhas to Ribeirinha (9 Steps of Trás-os-Montes)

The walking trail in Vila Flor chosen for the 9 Steps of Trás-os-Montes Project begins in Vilarinho das Azenhas and ends in the village of Ribeirinha, following the banks of the Tua River.

As for the 9 Steps Project, it brings together nine hiking routes from nine municipalities of Trás-os-Montes: Vinhais, Bragança, Vimioso, Miranda do Douro, Mogadouro, Macedo de Cavaleiros, Mirandela, Alfândega da Fé, and Vila Flor. You can even request a passport at local tourist offices to collect stamps from each trail you complete—pretty cool, right? It actually reminded me of my road trip along Portugal’s National Road 2.

The Vilarinho–Ribeirinha Trail is about 3 km one way, but since it’s linear, you’ll need to arrange transport for the return or walk another 3 km back to Vilarinho. It’s an easy hike, with the highlight being the landscapes of the Tua Valley Natural Park.

3. Vilas Boas

Vilas Boas is my third tip in this guide. The heart of the village is worth a stroll, especially the square around the Vilas Boas Pillory, where you’ll also find a small church, a fountain, and a statue honoring King Manuel I, who granted the village its charter over 500 years ago.

4. Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Assumption

Just outside Vilas Boas, you’ll find what I consider an absolute must: the best viewpoint in Vila Flor. Located at 760 meters of altitude, this 360-degree lookout offers breathtaking views stretching for up to 100 km in every direction.

Right beside it stands the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Assumption, built in the 19th century and regarded as the largest Marian sanctuary in Trás-os-Montes. For me, this spot was the highlight of Vila Flor—and my personal favorite place to visit.

5. Old Gallows of Freixiel

The Old Gallows of Freixiel is notable for its viewpoint overlooking the village of Freixiel and the surrounding vineyards. I visited in early autumn, and the warm colors of the vines at that time of year made the landscape truly unforgettable.

As for the gallows themselves, they consist of two stone pillars about three meters high, which once supported a wooden beam. Many people were executed here back when capital punishment was still permitted in Portugal.

6. Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary (Freixiel)

Also located near Freixiel, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary is well worth a stop. Its highlight is undoubtedly the view over the village, best appreciated from the top of the staircase leading up to the sanctuary.

7. Abreiro Bridge

Another highlight is the Abreiro Bridge, which crosses the Tua River and marks the border between Vila Flor and Mirandela. What impressed me the most here was the breathtaking view over the Tua Valley, with the old railway line running alongside the riverbed. Absolutely stunning!

Trains no longer run here, which is why I plan to return soon to hike along the line—at least in the sections that haven’t been submerged by the Tua.

8. Historic Center of Vila Flor

Finally, we arrive at the historic center of Vila Flor. I recommend starting your exploration either from Praça da República or from the opposite end of the town, near the Fonte das Bestas.

Fonte das Bestas

The Fonte das Bestas is a gated stone fountain dating back to the 14th or 15th century. Simple yet charming, it welcomes visitors at the entrance to the town.

Church of Mercy of Vila Flor & Largo do Rossio

The Church of Mercy stands in Largo do Rossio in Vila Flor. It’s a simple church, originally built in the 18th century, though later restored and altered.

The square itself is lovely, with a central fountain, lush greenery providing shade, and garden benches perfect for a pause. Don’t miss the impressive coat of arms on the building at the back of the square.

From Largo do Rossio, it’s an easy walk to the Main Church of Vila Flor and another of the town’s main squares. The church is also known as the Church of Saint Bartholomew, featuring two bell towers and a richly decorated façade with several ornamental details.

Municipal Museum Dra. Berta Cabral & Gateway to the Tua Valley in Vila Flor

Near the Main Church, you’ll find the Vila Flor Tourist Office and the Municipal Museum Dra. Berta Cabral. I stopped by late in the day, just before closing, so my visit was a quick glimpse at the vast collection—over 3,000 pieceson display!

According to the staff who welcomed me, the museum usually offers free guided tours, which provide deeper insights into the exhibitions and the building itself, originally dating back to the 12th or 13th century. This was once the Solar dos Aguilares, later serving as the Town Hall.

Praça da República, Amphitheater Garden, Chapel of Saint Lucy & Municipal Library

Next, you’ll come to Praça da República, home to two gardens and an amphitheater located near the Vila Flor Parish Council and the Municipal Library.

If you continue along the same road, you’ll pass the Chapel of Saint Lucy, eventually reaching another pleasant garden. This spot once featured a tourist swing—though it could never compete for the title of best swing in Vila Flor, as you’ll soon discover! 😉

Arch of King Dinis (Castle Arch of Vila Flor)

The Arch of King Dinis dates back to his reign and was built during the construction of the Castle of Vila Flor, after the town received its charter in 1286. It was one of the five gates of the castle walls, known as the main entrance to the town.

The so-called Roman Fountain is located just a few meters from the Arch of King Dinis. In reality, however, it dates back to the 16th century. The structure features six Ionic columns and four pillars supporting the dome.

9. Swing & Viewpoint of Our Lady of Lapa

Before leaving Vila Flor’s historic center, be sure to climb up to the stunning Viewpoint of Our Lady of Lapa, next to the sanctuary of the same name. From here, you’ll enjoy an incredible panoramic view of the town spread out below your feet. And to top it off, there’s a spectacular swing in a privileged spot—perfect for a memorable photo and a unique perspective over Vila Flor.

10. Peneireiro Dam

The Peneireiro Dam is also located on the outskirts of Vila Flor. It’s a favorite leisure spot for locals, with public swimming pools nearby and plenty of space for walking. Why not take a quick stroll around this large lake? I really enjoyed it!

11. Cabeço da Mina Interpretive Center

Last but not least is the Cabeço da Mina Interpretive Center, located in Assares. This area belongs to the Vilariça Valley, a region rich in natural heritage. The center introduces visitors to the geological formation of the valley and showcases the archaeological discoveries made in the area.

Things to do Near Vila Flor?

If you have more time in the Bragança district and want to extend your trip, start by exploring more of the Tua Valley Natural Park, especially the viewpoints in Alijó and Carrazeda de Ansiães.

Once you’ve seen those, why not head towards the Sabor Lakes? Or even the International Douro, which is also not far away. 😉

Fantastic tips—all of which you’ll find here on this travel blog! 😉
