Visiting Vila Verde means discovering one of the lesser-known municipalities of Minho. It often goes unnoticed due to the strong competition nearby, with Braga, Ponte de Lima, and Ponte da Barca just around the corner.
That said, I truly enjoyed exploring Vila Verde. I especially loved the northern part of the region, with its rural charm, as well as the peaceful spots along the Homem and Cávado rivers. The Oural Swing offers a breathtaking viewpoint, and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Relief is absolutely stunning, both inside and out.
In this article, I’ll show you everything worth visiting in Vila Verde—what I’ve mentioned so far is just a small taste of what you can discover.

Where is Vila Verde located, in Portugal?
Vila Verde is part of the Braga district. This charming Minho town is bordered by the municipalities of Amares, Terras de Bouro, Ponte da Barca, Ponte de Lima, Barcelos, and Braga. Its main rivers are the Cávado and the Homem, while the Neiva River has its source in the Oural Mountains.
If you’re planning an itinerary through the Minho region—of which Vila Verde is an integral part—below you’ll find a useful list of municipalities, each with links to other articles on this travel blog:

When to Visit Vila Verde
You can visit Vila Verde at any time of the year. That said, the river beaches are, of course, best enjoyed in the summer. Another great option is to plan your trip around the town’s main festivities, such as the Feast of Saint Anthony in June or the Feast of Our Lady of Relief in September.
Rent a car to visit Vila Verde
For car rentals, I recommend using Discover Cars, as it allows you to easily compare prices across different rental companies.

Gastronomy and restaurants in Vila Verde
When it comes to local cuisine, Vila Verde offers some truly traditional Minho flavors. Highlights include Arroz de Cabidela (a rich rice dish), bacalhau (codfish, prepared in countless ways), and rojões à moda do Minho (pork bites) often served with Papas de Sarrabulho.
For dessert, don’t miss the famous Abade de Priscos pudding—a unique and absolutely delicious treat.
As for restaurants, a great local tip is Churrasqueira Barros.

Best things to do in Vila Verde
This itinerary is divided into five stages: Vila Verde town center, the North, the South, the Cávado River, and the Homem River. As I’ve mentioned before, the northern area is, in my opinion, the most beautiful.
Below, you’ll find a map organized according to these sections.
Map with all the highlights of Vila Verde
Visiting Vila Verde Town Center
The town center of Vila Verde is quite compact, stretching along the N101 road that connects Braga to Ponte da Barca. Two main squares stand out: Praça do Município and Praça da República. While exploring, don’t miss the chance to:
- Visit the Igreja Nova de São Paio.
- Discover the Chapel of Saint Anthony.
- Stop by the Town Hall and the “Vila Verde” letters for a photo.
- Admire the architecture of the Municipal Library.
- Step inside the Namorar Portugal Store, home of the famous Lenços de Namorados, Vila Verde’s traditional embroidered love handkerchiefs.

Exploring the North of Vila Verde
The northern part of Vila Verde is, as I’ve already mentioned, the most rural area of the municipality. Here, you’ll drive past endless agricultural fields as you make your way through some of its most charming villages. If you’re planning a route in this region, I suggest following the sequence below:
- Church of São Salvador de Valdreu – believed to date back to the 12th century. A highlight is the lower room of the tower, which preserves architectural elements from earlier constructions.
- Church and Viewpoint of Santo António de Mixões da Serra – the drive up from Valdreu is pleasant, with beautiful views along the way.
- Village of Posto Maior.
- Village of Bezeguimbra.
- Fojo do Lobo de Gondomar – considered one of the largest wolf traps in the Iberian Peninsula. When I visited, it was unfortunately hidden by dense vegetation, making it hard to admire properly. This stop is optional.
- Villages of Nogueira, Bemposta, and Póvoa Dura – together with Posto Maior and Bezeguimbra, this area is simply stunning. Hopefully, Vila Verde will one day create marked hiking trails here—I know I’d be the first to do them! You can also pass by the villages of Casais, Gondomar, and Ameixoeira.
- Village of Casais de Vide.
- Aboim da Nóbrega town center – with its church and lovely surrounding garden.
- Castelo de Nóbrega – near Casais de Vide, you’ll find a hill topped with massive granite boulders, known as Castelo de Nóbrega, due to the ruins of an ancient castro (fortified settlement) still visible here.
Near Casais de Vide, you’ll find a hill topped with massive granite boulders, known as Castelo de Nóbrega, named after the ruins of an ancient castro (fortified settlement) located there.
Although the hill officially belongs to Ponte da Barca, it lies right on the border with Vila Verde—which is why I include it here. From the top, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking viewpoint to the south and a spectacular panorama over the Lima River valley to the north. You can even drive almost all the way up by taking the access roads from Ventoselo.

10. Oural Swing, Mamoa do Talefe & Source of the Neiva River
Another major highlight in Vila Verde is the Oural Swing, perched at an altitude of 700 meters. From here, the views are breathtaking—stretching across the entire municipality and surrounding landscapes, even reaching the ocean on clear, haze-free days. The swing itself is beautifully simple, without unnecessary frills, offering an unforgettable experience, especially at sunset.
Right next to it, you’ll find a megalithic monument known as the Mamoa do Talefe. Nearby, at the summit of the Oural Mountains, lies the source of the Neiva River, which flows all the way to the Atlantic Ocean, emptying between Esposende and Viana do Castelo.

11. Chapel and Citânia of São Julião de Caldelas
I still consider the Chapel and Citânia of São Julião part of northern Vila Verde. The chapel sits at the top of the hill, offering a beautiful viewpoint. But the true highlight here is the Citânia, the most important monument in the area, dating back to around 900 BC.

Visiting the South of Vila Verde
In the southern part of Vila Verde, you’ll find the municipality’s two most important sanctuaries: the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Relief (Nossa Senhora do Alívio) and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Good Dispatch (Nossa Senhora do Bom Despacho). The first was built in the 18th century, and the second in the 17th century. Both began as simple chapels, erected in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for cures from illness, but soon gained many devotees—eventually becoming major pilgrimage sites in the Minho region.
Another noteworthy monument in the south of Vila Verde is the Penegate Tower, also known as the Tower of D. Egas Pais (14th century). I also tried to visit the Linen Museum in Arcozelo, but unfortunately it was closed at the time—still, it’s worth keeping in mind.

Discovering the Cávado River in Vila Verde
No guide to Vila Verde would be complete without mentioning the beauty of the Cávado River. Along its course through the municipality, you’ll find river beaches and picturesque bridges marking the border with Braga.
On this article I’ll just leave you with a simple list of those beaches found in Vila Verde, along with one or two photos of each.
1. River beach of Cabanelas

2. River beach of Merelim de São Paio

3. Faial River beach (the best one!)

4. River beach of Ponte do Bico

Discovering the Homem River in Vila Verde
Lastly, let’s turn to the Homem River. Below, I’ve listed the main river beaches and bridges in Vila Verde, as well as a few in the neighboring municipalities of Amares and Terras de Bouro—so long as they’re easily accessible from Vila Verde’s border.
Personally, I much preferred the Cávado River beaches, especially the Faial River beach, so I’d consider these more of an optional extra for travelers who want to explore the municipality in detail.
- River beach of Soutelo
- River beach of Vau
- River beach of Moleira
- River beach of Loureira (one of the best!)
- River beach of Malheira (another top choice!)
- River beach of Moinhos (also a very nice spot!)
- River beach of Garrafas
- Ponte de Rodas (a charming old bridge, very beautiful!)
- Oriz Leisure Area
- River beach of Souto
- River beach of Rio Homem
All of these places are marked on the map included in this article. I actually stumbled upon them while exploring the riverbanks on Google Maps, and later went to visit them myself. The ones I enjoyed the most are highlighted above in the description. 😉 Hope this helps—of course, that’s just my personal taste!
