Visiting Vizela means discovering one of the smallest municipalities in Portugal. A single morning or afternoon is more than enough to see its main highlights, such as the Praça da República, the Thermal Park, and the Sanctuary of São Bento das Peras.

Though small, Vizela has plenty of charm and is absolutely worth including in any Minho itinerary. It’s also the birthplace of one of Portugal’s sweetest treasures: the famous Bolinhol cake—a must-try treat that’s simply delicious.

In this guide, I’ll show you the top attractions to visit in Vizela so you can make the most of your trip.

Where is Vizela located, in Portugal?

Vizela is located in the southern part of the Braga district, right on the border with the Porto district. Its neighboring municipalities are Guimarães, Santo Tirso, Felgueiras, and Lousada.

Since Vizela is part of the Minho region, here’s a list of other municipalities you can explore nearby. Many of them already have detailed articles on this blog with practical tips on what to see and do around Vizela. Why not start with the Guimarães guide, for example?

When to Visit Vizela?

You can visit Vizela at any time of the year. Still, here are a few dates worth noting: the municipal holiday is on March 19, the city festivals take place in early August (second week), and the pilgrimage to São Bento das Peras is held on July 11.

Vizela is also famous for its thermal baths, making it a perfect destination for a relaxing getaway of two or three days—no matter the season.

Gastronomy and restaurants in Vizela

When it comes to local food, there’s one specialty you absolutely can’t miss: the Bolinhol de Vizela. This moist sponge cake, considered one of the 7 Wonders of Portuguese Sweets, is a true gastronomic gem. You can easily find it at Pastelaria Fina, right on Vizela’s Praça da República, in the heart of the city.

For dining, I recommend Restaurante Águia d’Ouro or Restaurante Rainha, both great choices to enjoy a good meal in Vizela.

Where to stay in Vizela?

I’ve never actually stayed overnight in Vizela myself, as I visited the city on a day trip from Braga. So the following suggestions are based on research done directly through Booking.

The Hotel Bienestar is the main hotel connected to the Vizela Thermal Spa. However, it has somewhat mixed reviews, with a rating below 7/10. On the plus side, it’s centrally located right next to the park.

If you don’t mind being a little farther from the center, Casa das Carpas, Baiona GuestHouse and Quinta das Lavandeiras all look like excellent alternatives with better overall impressions.

Best things to do in Vizela

This itinerary focuses mainly on the historic center and the Sanctuary of São Bento das Peras, located at the highest point of the municipality. I’ll also suggest a few places in the surrounding area—but those are entirely optional.

Historic Center of Vizela

In Vizela’s historic center, I recommend parking somewhere near Praça da República, the heart of the city. From there, you can easily explore all the main sights on foot.

1. Praça da República & the Bica Quente

At the center of Praça da República stands the Bica Quente, a fountain where thermal water naturally flows. According to local legend, anyone who dips their hands in its waters will be “forever bound” to Vizela.

Next to the staircase leading to the fountain, you’ll also find a statue of Dr. Abílio Torres, the first director of Vizela’s thermal spa. He played a key role in developing the use of the region’s thermal waters and in creating the Thermal Park.

2. Roman Vizela & Manuel Faria Public Garden

The Statue of Roman Vizela, which recalls the Roman origins of the city’s thermal baths, stood for many years in the Manuel Faria Public Garden. It has since been moved to Praça da República.

The garden itself offers a very different atmosphere from the square. Smaller and more intimate, it features a lawn, bandstand, benches, a small lake, and a statue of Camilo Castelo Branco placed on a side staircase. Camilo, one of Portugal’s greatest writers, was a true admirer of Vizela, visiting frequently to enjoy its thermal waters and riverside setting.

Not far from Camilo’s statue, you’ll also find Pastelaria Fina—the perfect place to pick up a Bolinhol de Vizela.

3. Rua Dr. Abílio Torres

Rua Dr. Abílio Torres is Vizela’s main street. It leads directly to the Thermal Park and then crosses over the Vizela River. Paved with traditional cobblestones, the street is lined with a few elegant buildings that add to its charm.

4. Church of São João

Before reaching the Thermal Park, you’ll pass by the Hotel Bienestar, which I mentioned earlier in this article—an option if you’d like to stay overnight.

One of the highlights along Rua Dr. Abílio Torres is the Church of São João, dating back to the early 20th century.

5. Vizela Thermal Spa & Roman Bridge

Following Rua das Termas, you’ll come to the Vizela Thermal Spa building. The thermal waters here are traditionally recommended for the treatment of chronic rheumatism, respiratory conditions, and skin diseases.

A little further ahead, you’ll find a leisure and picnic park beside an old bridge of Roman origin. This Roman Bridge, once part of the road linking Braga to Amarante, has been classified as a National Monument since 1910.

6. Vizela Thermal Park

The Thermal Park is the most beautiful spot in Vizela. I first visited in winter, and even then it amazed me—so I can only imagine how stunning it must be in spring, when it’s greener and in full bloom.

Located along the banks of the Vizela River, the park doesn’t need the river to shine on its own. One of its highlights is the large lake at one end, and more recently it was officially recognized as a Historic Garden of Portugal.

7. Museums of Vizela

While in Vizela, you can also visit a couple of interesting museums:

  • Vizela Volunteer Firefighters Museum – Opened in 2017, this museum tells the story of the city’s fire brigade and displays a collection of old vehicles, equipment, and uniforms.
  • Casa das Bonecas (Doll House) – Inaugurated in 2018, it showcases more than 2,000 dolls from the private collection of Delfina Barata.

8. Church of São Miguel

Finally, there’s the Church of São Miguel. More modern in appearance than the Church of São João, it is also much more recent, with just over 50 years of history.

Walking the Vizela Boardwalks

The Vizela Boardwalks, inaugurated in March 2024, offer a stunning six-kilometer trail (about twelve round trip) along the Vizela River and the Ribeira de Sá. The route begins at the historic Roman Bridge and passes by iconic landmarks such as the D. Luís I Bridge and the Vizela Thermal Park, before ending at the Rompecias Waterfall. With gentle slopes and a linear layout, it’s the perfect walk for anyone seeking close contact with nature without much physical effort.

But this is more than just a scenic path—it’s part of a wider project to enhance the riverbanks, promote sustainable tourism, and improve local quality of life. What makes the experience even more special is its accessibility: the trail is free, well signposted, and easy, making it ideal for families, groups of friends, or even solo walkers.

Walking the Vizela Boardwalks means feeling the calm of the riverside, discovering hidden natural gems, and above all, experiencing a destination that blends nature, culture, and leisure in perfect harmony. For anyone planning an inspiring getaway in the Minho region, this is simply a must.

Sanctuary of São Bento das Peras

After exploring Vizela’s historic center—which will take you no more than two or three hours unless you decide to enjoy the thermal baths—it’s time to head up to the Sanctuary of São Bento das Peras, perched at 410 meters of altitude.

Here you’ll find a peaceful park, highlighted by spectacular viewpoints with sweeping panoramas. In addition to the sanctuary itself, don’t miss the Hermitage of Santo Huberto, hidden among the rocks and often overlooked by visitors!

Other Places in the Municipality of Vizela

There are two additional (optional) places worth mentioning:

  • Padrão do Tratado de Tagilde – A monument marking the treaty signed on July 10, 1372, in Tagilde, which sealed the alliance between Portugal and England—the oldest military alliance in the world.
  • Chapel of Santa Ana – A small chapel with a lovely viewpoint overlooking the northern part of Vizela.
